French Fry Cutter vs Mandoline

Both can make fries, but they work very differently.

French fry cutter

A fry cutter pushes a whole potato through a blade grid in one press, producing a full potato of even batons instantly. It is the fastest, most uniform way to make fries, and some cut wedges too, but it is a single-purpose tool.

Mandoline

A mandoline with a thick julienne or fry blade can cut batons, but you slice the potato in passes and must use the hand guard carefully. It is far more versatile, also slicing chips, gratins and vegetables, but slower and less uniform for a batch of fries.

Which to choose

Choose a fry cutter if you make fries often and want speed and uniformity. Choose a mandoline if you want one versatile slicing tool and only make fries occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

Is a french fry cutter faster than a mandoline for fries?

Yes. A cutter presses a whole potato into even batons in one push, while a mandoline slices in passes. For a batch of fries, the cutter is much faster and more uniform.

Can a french fry cutter make wedges?

Many can, with a wedge blade insert. Check the model; some include wedge grids alongside the standard 1/4 and 3/8 inch fry blades.
